A Year in Review: 2013

Hey Nibblers!

Christmas Day's Dessert Table at the 'Nibble House'

It's been a while. I feel like these past few months have flown by so quickly. I don't know where time went. I do know I haven't been able to post as frequently but with 2014 upon us, I'm excited to get things back on track.

2013 has been quite a year. It was the year I finally plucked up the courage to start 'Nibble Nation' and start sharing my opinions, recipes and life online! I feel so grateful to have had the support of friends and family and to you Nibblers that have commented on my posts. It really does bring a smile to my face and I hope you continue that into 2014.

Through this blogging journey, I've discovered that I love to bake. I had always thought myself as the savoury kind of gal but, after experimenting and discovering myself (time cringe-worthy moment) I definitely like to bake. I'm finding myself hopping off to the grocery store to buy unsalted butter instead of a good ol' steak. So with that being said, I hope to share and develop my skills with you come 2014.

It's also almost been a year since I left off to Europe with Kelly. It makes me quite sad to think I won't be going on an adventure any time soon. But, not to fear! I still intend to finish off my 'Travel Tuesdays' series and add to this segment (newly named: 'Travel Nibbles') whenever I'm out of Sydney.

Until then, I hope you all had a lovely Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May 2014 bring amazing things for you and be sure to comment or share any of your foodie experiences because I would love to hear them! Oh, speaking of sharing, I've decided to start a '365 What I Ate For Dinner' challenge for 2014. So, if you're up for it, do join in! I'll be making an extra tab on this page and sharing a few of my snaps on my instagram as well (links in my 'Contact' segment.)

Nibble  Away,
and see you in the new year,

           Jo x.

And to finish, a re-cap of the year.

How To: Starburst Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Frosting

Hey Nibblers!

I have literally just finished my last uni exam for this year. I'm peering outside my window and all I see is rain. Usually, this upsets me but, I've feeling quite calm from the pattering sounds hitting my window. Thunder and lighting are going at it with each other but for some reason I'm in such a festive mood. I love christmas. It's just the frantic present hunting trips, crazy parking queues and mountains of food that have me chirping for days. To celebrate my elevated spirits, I thought I would share with you something a little bit quirky. I've never seen a recipe like it before so I hope I've just created something special you could try out for the coming festive season.
I can't take all the credit for this little invention of mine. It started about seven years ago when my food tech assignment was to bake a cupcake with any topping we wanted. Everyone opted for the normal options of either choc chips, fruits and veggies. I on the other hand forgot to even bring anything from home. So, I quickly called Kelly (as she loved close by) and asked her if she had anything at home. She only had Starburst gummy lollies and as to not be in trouble, I said yes. They turned out to be amazing! The gummy bits basically just melt into colourful puddles of sugar in the cupcake but, it's really quite delicious. I can't explain it well but it's like eating lollies and cake all in one go. It sounds weird but it works. Now, seven years on, I've decided to re-create that and put an extra twist on the original creation and add some peanut butter frosting. Hope you enjoy!

What you'll need: (Makes 12 large cupcakes)
For the cupcakes:

- 3 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/3 cup of milk
- 3/4 cup of Starburst Jelly Babies
(OR your favourite gummy lollies, just roughly cut them into 1x1cm chucks to avoid the cupcake breaking when cooled.)
- 180g of melted unsalted butter

For the peanut butter frosting (optional):
I've just discovered Elise's Youtube channel, 'MyCupcakeAddition' where she makes the most awesome cupcakes, cakes and cake pops and does an awesome job of decorating them.
I used her 'Buttercream Frosting' recipe and added 2 heaped Tbs. of smooth peanut butter to make the peanut butter flavouring as she does in her  'Giant Reese's Butter Cup Cake' recipe. You should definitely click on the links to check her out!

How to:
1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit)
2. Line or spray your cupcake tray to prepare for cupcake mixture
3. Beat your melted butter, vanilla and eggs in a mixing bowl then set aside
4. Measure out your flour, sugar, baking powder into a large mixing bowl and mix well together
5. Fold your wet mixture (egg, butter, vanilla) into your dry ingredients bowl combine until well incorporated
6. Mix in your milk and Starburst Jelly babies until well combined
7. Divide equally into lined cupcake tray
8. Pop them into the oven for 18 minutes, checking with a wooden skewer to see if it's cooked
9. Prepare your peanut butter frosting in the meantime using Elise's recipe linked above

10. Take the cupcakes out of the oven and them to cool for about 10 minutes
11. Cut your cupcakes horizontally into equal pieces as if you were making a sandwich
12. Spoon in a generous amount of frosting onto one side and pop the other half on top
13. Nibble away!

Hope you Nibblers enjoyed this recipe! Just looking at these pictures has made me even more excited! If you want to make these especially festive, just use only red and green gummy lollies! They will taste just as awesome. They do also keep up to a week and a bit if you refrigerate them. Just microwave them for about 20 seconds (depending on your microwave) and they come out as good as if they've just been baked. On that note, I think it's time to put the Christmas tree up! When do you start putting those festive decorations up? I always do it the day I finish my exams.
If you do try this recipe out or have any other thoughts, tweet me or leave a comment below! All my contact info in in the 'About Me' tab. Hope you're all having an amazing week. Here's a few more shots of the finished product.

How to: Banana Cupcakes

Hey Nibblers!

I know I've already posted a banana cake recipe but since then, I've started experimenting and after three successful attempts, I just had to share it with you all. It's such a quick recipe that doesn't take much of your time. It's moist and stays light and fluffy the next day. Even if you refrigerate them, just pop them into the microwave for about 30 seconds (depending on how strong your microwave is) and they'll be as amazing as if you just baked them!
My Mum is one of my hardest critics but she is also one of my biggest inspirations. She's also a lover of bananas. This recipe has her nod of approval and with that, let's get into this.

What you'll need: (With this recipe, I make about 12 large cupcakes)
       - For the cupcake version bake for 18-20 minutes. Check them using the skewer insertion method
         - For a large cake version bake for 40-45 minutes.

- 1 1/2 cups of self-raising flour
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
Add 3/4 cup if you love that extra sugar kick.
- 4 small to medium ripe bananas
- 1 1/2 tsp. of baking powder
- 1 Tbs. cinnamon spice
- 1/3 cup of milk
- 3 eggs
- 180g melted unsalted butter

How to:
1. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit)
2. Line your cupcake tin with baking paper or grease your tin well
3. Mash your bananas until well combined. Large 1cm chunks of banana is fine

4. Whisk your melted butter, milk and eggs in a medium sized mixing bowl until well combined
5. Add your mashed bananas to your whisked wet ingredients and mix until well combined
6. Combine your self-raising flour, cinnamon, sugar and baking powder and mix together so it looks like a dry marinade mix

7. Fold your dry and wet ingredients together until you can't see anymore flour through the mixture or stuck on the side of the bowls

8. Fill your cupcake tin moulds, dividing it into equals amounts
(I filled mine about 3/4 of the way up)

9. Pop your tin into the oven for 18-20 minutes
10. Rest these babies cool down (if you can) for 5 minutes before devouring
(They won't stick to the cupcake paper if you let them rest!)

Hope you give this recipe a try. If you do, be sure to leave a comment! I'll be happy to answer any questions and be happy to try any requests of yours. Hope you're all having a great week.

Nibble away,

Travel Nibbles: 'Laduree' Paris Review

Bonjour Nibblers!

Kelly and I find ourselves in Paris this week. I have amazing family there and after almost two weeks without any means to a washing machine, we couldn't wait to arrive. It was a horrible 8 hour / overnight train trip from Berlin to Paris but the thought of the amazing pastries, sweets, bread it was well worth the little bit of discomfort. This is my second time in Paris in Winter. But, Kelly and I went at the most perfect time. We didn't have to wear the 6 layers we were wearing in Berlin and were able to cut back to two layers and even were able to wear sunglasses if I had them (I left mine in London.) Anyway, when in Paris, 'Laduree' is one of the main food attractions. Depending on the time you go, the line could go well outside the door so aim for early morning or late lunch hours (3-4PM). We didn't dine here as we we were short on time but did purchase quite a few goodies.

Where: 75 avenue des Champs-Elysées - 75008 Paris                                Website: http://www.laduree.com/douceurs/

Such simple but beautiful packaging
I don't even know how to start with this review. Let's  just start off with looking at some of the sneaky shots Kelly and I took in Laduree while we were waiting in line.

Macaroon flavours
Inside the magic of Laduree

Gift ideas
Almost at the front of the line!
We couldn't help but buy a gift box for my family. The boxes were so pretty!
I'll start with service. The lady that served us was amazing. We didn't really understand how the whole system worked but she took her time and was very patient with us. You also don't have to worry about language barriers here because most of the customers inside were tourists so communication was easy. I also loved how everything was laid out and labelled so it was just easy to navigate when ordering.
Kelly and I decided to grab ourselves a box of 8 macaroons. You can grab just one but if you buy 4 or more they pop it into a Laduree box for free! Since we waited for about 20 minutes, we wanted to go all out and invest in these 8 macaroons. I can't remember the exact pricing but it was roughly €2.60 each (approx. $3.70 AUD).

Our Macaroon purchase
We each picked 4 flavours each. We ate half of each macaroon over the 4 days we were in Paris just so we could enjoy the flavours together They were:
- Chocolate
My favourite! I did not expect it to be my favourite as Kelly is the chocoholic of the family. But it was not too sweet and the ganache was just perfect. Melted in my mouth and honestly the best macaroon I've ever had.
- Caramel with Salted Butter
Kelly's favourite! It was a hit of creamy caramel as soon as you bite into it and then the salty butter hits you after. While I thoroughly enjoyed this half, I thought it was a bit too sweet for me. But eaten as a half was amazing.
- Coffee
Great coffee flavour, not too sweet and would be so great with a warm cup of tea.
- Green Apple (seasonal flavour, we were there in Feb)
I love apples but, this was one of my least favourites. The apple flavour was intense which is great but, it didn't hit it with me. Too fruity for winter.
- Rose Petal
It tastes exactly like a rose petal. I like the rose petal scent but when it comes too flavour, I can't eat a lot of it. It tastes odd to me as it's a flavour I'm not usually accustomed to. But, if you love the rose, go for it.
- Pistachio
I loved the minty colour of this macaroon. It tasted nutty as it should but compared to the others, would not be a stand out.
- Vanilla
A very typical vanilla flavour. The Madagascar cream I felt was a bit grainy in texture. It was again a bit too sweet for my liking.
- Coconut
Too sweet for me but the strong coconut flavour as soon as you bite in was amazing.

As a whole, the macaroons were amazing. Every macaroon was equal in size and proportion. What I loved was every time I bit into one of those macaroons, the meringue was still so light and crispy and the ganache/cream fillings were full of flavour. They're such a perfect match for each other and even after a few days, it still tasted as if we had first bought them. I've seriously have not had a macaroon better than these Laduree ones. I'm not too sure about the other world-wide branches but I do want to compare them sometime in the future.
When we were about to check out we also saw an Eclair for sale. There was a Coffee version and chocolate version. We opted for the chocolate. It was about €3.50 (approx. $5 AUD) which is definitely not cheap so we were expecting great things. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to it's name. While it was light and crispy, it didn't have the same 'melt-in-your-mouth' wow factor we were after. Also, I felt we could have paid less for an Eclair else where.
But, despite the little fall on the Eclair, we did have an amazing time scoffing it down while watching the sunset at the Eiffel Tower and witnessing the first sparkle of the night.

Sunset at the Eiffel Tower - Trocadero
Hope you're all having an amazing week! I sure know how good it feels to be putting a blogpost up. Last uni assignment are out of the way and only a few exams more to go before celebrations are in order.
Leave a comment down below if you have had an awesome Macaroon experience like mine and what you had!

How To: Hot Dogs with Sauerkraut

Hey Nibblers!

With Oktoberfest well in their swing of things / party time slowly dying down, I thought I pop out a Bavarian inspired recipe. I'm not going to lie, I made and documented this a couple of weeks ago but didn't have the time to pop it on here. I must also add I was inspired by 'Brother Green Eats' to make these quick, delicious hot dog with cheater's edition sauerkraut. If you haven't checked them out on Youtube, they're two brothers Josh and Mike who make finger-licking food. Whether it is whatever they have on hand or re-creating some of their favourites, it always makes me hungry. I love how their love of cooking and experimenting show in their food and they don't need fancy tools to achieve it.

What you'll need: (for 6 servings)

- 6 hot dog buns (OR whatever buns you like)
- 6 thin Frankfurters (Pick your favourite or experiment)
- 1/2 cup of red wine vinegar (Any sweet vinegar will do)
- Tomato sauce and Mustard (OR your fav hot dog sauces)
Note: While Dijonnaise is pictured, I thought it woud have went well. However, the creamy whole mustard seeds overpowered the sauerkraut so I suggest using just mustard if you're making it for yourself to be able to get the whole experience
- 6 cups of washed, roughly sliced cabbage strips (OR a half-filled microwave-safe 8 inch bowl)
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- Tap water

How To:
1. Slice your cabbage strips into rough 1cm wide x 2-3cm long. (They'll shrink after they cook so don't worry if they're a tad too big.)
2. Pop your sliced cabbage in a microwave-safe bowl along with your salt and vinegar
3. Add some tap water until it rises and engulfs the cabbage pieces
4. Taste your vinegar, salty cabbage marinade water. It should taste sour but sweet so a fermented taste
(Note: If it's too sour, add a bit more salt.
Too sweet? add some more vinegar)

5. Microwave your cabbage bowl for 10 minutes (Depending on the power of your microwave, you may need to leave it in longer or less. After the initial microwave session, you want your cabbage to be almost cooked.)
6. Cut your hot buns right through the in the middle or across ways (Whichever enhances your hot dog senses)

6. Add your frankfurters to the cabbage bowl and pop it back into the microwave for 3 minutes (By the end of this stage, your frankfurters will be nicely steamed/ infused with the vinegar and cabbage and your cabbage cooked to perfection)

7. Assemble hot dog!

Add Frankfurter
Add cheater's sauerkraut
Add your favourite sauces
And you're done! Quick and easy! You should definitely give this one a try. It'll be great as party food or even just making the sauerkraut for a side to the rest of your dinner.

Leave a comment below if you do try it or for any other suggestions. Hope you enjoyed this post and are having an amazing week!

Travel Nibbles: 'Thai Inside' Review

Hey Nibblers!

Kelly and I had many cravings while we were on our European adventure. One of those cravings was Thai food. At home, Thai food is usually something that we indulge in when we want an easy, delicious lunch or dinner and is so accessible in Sydney. It has been really hard to satisfy our cravings for the fact that we don't stay in a city long enough to explore or have the time to find places we want. We basically go to whatever we can walk to that is relatively close to where we're staying so we don't lose our way. You know, girls not being able to read maps or something? No, but seriously, it's dark at 5pm in Europe and when we can hardly see street names or have phone internet data for a GPS, we try and stick close to home. So when we were searching on 'Tripadvisor' for good and found a 4.5/5 rating for 'Thai Inside', we just had to!

'Thai Inside' Review
Where: Dircksenstrasse 3710178 BerlinMitte                           Website: http://www.thai-inside.de/index_english.html#

Source: http://www.city-rausch.de/bilder-berlin/thai-inside.jpg
This was our last dinner in Berlin. We were trying to keep ourselves busy all night because we booked ourselves a 12am train to Paris. Yes, a midnight, overnight train so we tried to kill as much time as possible. Upon entering 'Thai Inside,' it was bustling with people. They had clean, authentic Thai pieces and they even had a free coat service which was amazing. Service was friendly and again, there was no problem with communication. Also, the lighting in there was a bit yellow and I only have an old point and shoot so, it's not top notch pictures unfortunately.
Anyway it was almost 830pm at this stage so we were both pretty hungry. For starters, we ordered the 'Prince' Mixed Platter Entree which consisted of 'Gai Sate' which is grilled marinated chicken with spicy peanut sauce, 'Thai Inside Rolls' which are spring rolls filled with glass noodles, chicken hash and taro potatoes served with a spicy tamarind sauce and 'Giau Thod' which is a deep-fried stuffed pastry with ground prawn/ chicken meat served with a sweet and sour sauce.
I loved the presentation of their 'Prince' Platter. It was neat and decorated with perfect cucumber flowers. It felt like we were in a tropical place in the middle of winter. Their sauce portions were generous and components were standard. The 'Gai Sate' was perfectly grilled and I liked the dense peanut sauce that went with it. It was sweeter than what I've had but it did have more of a spicy kick that other places lacked which balance it out well. The 'Thai Inside Rolls' were crispy, steaming hot but there was nothing stand out about it. I did love the spicy tamarind sauce that went along with the spring rolls. The 'Giau Thod' was soggy. Didn't have the same crisp that the spring rolls had which was a shame and I felt it lacked in the flavour department as well. However, at €7.20 ($10.20 AUD approx.) it's a not too bad for a party of two.

'Prince' Platter
For the mains, we both went for out typical / favourite Thai dishes. I opted for 'Phad Thai' which had fried rice noodles with tofu, king prawns, peanuts, scrambled eggs, bean sprouts, lime juice and tamarind sauce. Kelly on the other hand, ordered the 'Pad Si-Iu' which consisted of fried wide rice noodles with chicken, scrambled eggs and leafy vegetables served in a soy sauce.
Again, the presentation of both dishes were really eye-catching. The 'Phad Thai' had two radish flowers to decorate while the 'Pad Si-Iu' had the cucumber flower which was just as perfect as the one we had on our entree platter. Portions for both looked quite small but once we dug in and mixed everything together, it was the usual generous portions. Let's just say we were both pretty stuffed by the end of the night. In terms of taste for the 'Phad Thai,' it had good texture. The crunchy bean sprouts paired with the saucy noodles and fried bits of tofu was a good combination. However, I found that it was just too sweet. While it was delicious to start off with, it was too sweet towards the end. It would have been nice to have a chilli kick or salt to even it out. Priced at €13.80 ($19.50 AUD approx.) I feel was not worth what it was.

'Phad Thai'
Kelly's 'Pad Si-Iu' was lathered in sauce which is good. It was a definite change to the sweetness of mine but lacked that smoky flavour that a typical 'Pad Si-Iu' would usually have. Other than that, I think it was a good dish and worth the €8.60 ($12 AUD approx.) price.

Getting my hand shake = blurred picture. 'Pad Si-Iu'

To accompany our meal, Kelly ordered a 'Mocito' which had white rum, lime juice, brown sugar and fresh mint in its mix. It was served in a ginormous wine glass and had such an amazing rich green colour. Taste was fresh and great, fun presentation. If fit in well with the meal. We ordered these drinks at the start and for some reason, I was craving cold icy drinks. I know it was freezing cold outisde but my taste buds were not having those hot drinks so, I ordered the 'Cocos Dream.' This looked amazing. I could totally picture myself on an island, sipping on my coconut milk, pineapple juice, sweet cream and chocolate syrup drink. It looked amazing but as soon as I sipped it, it was diabetes in a glass. It's great if you love sweets and love coconut but oh man, it was like drinking coconut cream. Mind you, I finished that bad boy but if you were to ask me if I would order it again I would probably go for a fresher drink to balance out the dishes we had.
'Cocos Dream'  €6.00 ($8.40 AUD approx.)
All in all, I loved the atmosphere of 'Thai Inside.' While I didn't think the dishes we had were all top standard, my cravings were well satisfied. So, I say if you're in the area, love the good ol' sweet Thai food creations and want to feel fancy, I say go to 'Thai Inside.' For those that like the more savoury versions, I say perhaps this isn't the place. It looked like a great place to catch up with friends and we didn't feel rushed to eat while we were there. So thumbs up to that!

Dinner! Kelly's 'Mocito' in the background.

Travel Nibbles: 'Rosenburger' Review

Hi Nibblers!

It's not Tuesday! I should really stop being so delayed. But, better late than never right? No, not really. I blame uni. With just three weeks to go before semester ends and exams start, I'm engaging in assessment after assessment. The good thing about having to studying is being able to procrastibake. So, I've been testing out a couple of recipes out for you all and they should be up on 'Nibble Nation'  as soon as I get to perfecting and re-taking the pictures. Anyway, enough of my life story let's get into this travel review.

'Rosenburger' Review
Where: Brunnenstrasse 196, Mitte 10119     Website: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rosenburger/543848369010597
Image taken by Billy Rosendale: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7326/8881283953_fff08d66e8_z.jpg

Kelly and I were starving by this point (Still in Berlin) so when we spotted 'Rosenburger,' we were pretty pumped to grab some burgers. The menus were very traveller friendly and offered english translations. 'Rosenburger' is basically a self-serve fast food place that offers a range of burgers which include organic and vegetarian options, hot dogs, burritos accompanied by either a salad, chips or onion rings etc. Unfortunately, I relied too much on technology and didn't write exactly what we ordered down. They don't have a menu anywhere on the interwebs so all I have is a picture of it all. So I'm sorry I can;t delve into more details on each burger butcan only give you an overall idea of how I felt about 'Rosenburger.'
Generous servings

First off, service was amazing. The guy that took our order was very accompanying and brought our food to the table because they work on a number system and we didn't react when they said the number '4' in German.
I ordered a normal beef cheeseburger while Kelly opted for a chicken burger with a side of chips and a portion of onion rings to share. Presentation was nothing fancy but, we weren't expecting much so no disappointment there. The chips were delicious. They were steaming hot, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The perfect accompaniment. The onion rings were equally crispy. They used actual onion slices instead of mushy onion pieces that you find else where. I definitely recommend grabbing both sides if you just want to go all out on the sides.
As for their burgers, they offer great vegetarian options and organic versions if that's your type of thing. From what I remember, food came out pretty quickly and you can basically see the kitchen and chef(s) making your burger to order. The burger tasted fresh, patties were juicy and lathered in their sauces. You could also see all the components of the burger so you can see everything you're eating. Expect a burger that is better than your typical fast food joint but thinner portions than a gourmet burger. They were generous in their sauce content and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only downside were the burger buns. They weren't steaming hot and weren't soft and fluffy. It was sort of like buying just any ordinary burger buns from your local supermarket.
All in all, I would definitely go here again. I didn't feel bloated like I usually do when I eat fast-food and found prices relative to what you get at say McDonalds, KFC etc. So, for a meal, I believe for their average meal option, it was about 7 euros which is an equivalent of $10AUD. Hope you enjoyed this quickie of a review. Comment below if you've tried 'Rosenburger' or have any recommendations for places you love in Berlin. I would love to try them the next time I'm there (crossing my fingers for next year.)

Have a lovely week and until next time,

Nibble Away,

Jo x.

P.S. how cute are these Berlin bears? They're everywhere around the city!

'Sushi Hotaru' Review (The Galeries Victoria)

Hey Nibblers!

If you read my last post, you would have seen that I have a slight obsession with sushi. I have no shame when I say that I've had days where for breakfast, lunch and dinner I've eaten sushi. I never used to feel this way about sushi but ever since coming back from travelling, I've formed an attraction. It is weird though because in those five weeks, we only ate sushi twice and it wasn't even great.  I do love my sashimi  and I remember ever only allowed to eat it on special occasions. So, when I was first introduced to 'Sushi Hotaru' and saw I could have my own little serving of sashimi to myself, I knew I had found love. Since our first date, I've been here about eight times. Yes, you read correct. Eight. This is how much I love sushi and 'Sushi Hotaru.' So what has me coming back for more you ask? Let's get into the nitty gritty details then shall we?

'Sushi Hotaru'
Where: The Galeries Victoria RP1, 500 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000       Website: http://yesfood.com.au/hotaru.html

First off, I love the set-up of this place. While narrow, it manages to fit a capacity of 80 people. The turnover is fast and everything is efficient. Staff are very friendly but, the 'Sushi Hotaru' can get really busy during peak hours and you do have to wait. The thing was when I took Kelly and my other cousin Kimberley we arrived at peak hour and didn't have to wait for more than 15 minutes which I say is pretty good. We could have been lucky but, I think it's more the way it all works. You come in to eat sushi with some friends for lunch or dinner and then you're out. It's loud and a tad crowded at times to have a nice catch up. This is definitely not large party friendly as there are not enough tables so I say travel in two, three or fours at maximum.
Sushi belt
What I also love is the use of their electronic machines. They have their whole menu stored on an iPad which is located at ever bench top or table depending on where you are sitting. For certain menu items such as their amazing handrolls, they don't run on the sushi belt so you have to order them on the iPad and a member of staff comes to your table to deliver your roll. Or if you can't see what you're after on the belt, you can order it on the iPad and it comes freshly made for you.

In terms of pricing, everything is $3 unless otherwise stated. If you're unsure, check on the iPad. For those that don't have a price tag next to their name I can assure you it's $3. It's a bit hard for me to explain it all as there is so much variety but on my past eight visits, I did take a couple of photos of some of the dishes I ate and review them for you. So here goes, I'll split them into sections to make it a tad easier:

Hand Rolls (All $3 each)
Spicy Tuna roll $3
Eel, Spicy Tuna Mentalko and Soft Shell Crab handrolls. Shark Fin Salad Gunkan (in the background) $3 AUD each
Up close and personal with the Soft Shell Crab hand roll
As far I have tried, all the hand rolls I've had are absolute perfect. The spicy tuna/ salmon are awesome if you love the sashimi types and the seaweed is so crisp, it meets ever food texture you need. I'm not a fan of eel but if you are, it's as decadent. These are made fresh so everything is hot, generous in the sauce department and consistent it the rice to filling ratio. The soft shell is amazing! Crispy, perfectly seasoned and a great serving of Jap mayo and this is a winner.
'Wagyu beef' / 'Wagyu omlette' is so juicy and flavoursome if you're into beef.
I didn't like the 'Oyster Omlette' hand roll though. It tasted too much like the sea to me.
'Seared Salmon' is good but, if you want perfection in your mouth choose the seared 'Nigiri Sushi' selection instead.

Gunkan Sushi (All $3 each)
From memory, I've only tried:
The 'Flying Fish Roe' has a fun crunchy texture as normal but I found it to be too salty for my liking. They are generous with their roe servings though
'Shark Fin' Salad is delicious. A bit sour and sweet and crunchy, it is definitely one of my favourites.
'Lobster Salad' was again generous but nothing special.
'Octopus Salad' was a tad salty for me and had wasabi infused in the mixture. My brother did like this though and would opt for it again.
'Salmon Roe' are larger eggs but they lack the crunch that the 'Flying Fish Roe' had. Without that texture, it was not more than salty mush.

Roll Sushi (All $3 each)
'Tempura Prawn' was a let down. I felt it was cold and the fried prawn tasted too much of oil
Tempura Roll
'Soft Shell Crab' this place has it down packed for the soft shell crab department. It tastes amazing, always fresh and no taste of the greasy flavour. I love all variation sushi from them.

Soft Shell Crab Roll
'Chicken Katsu' is like a standard sushi roll in the shops. While it was nice, it would not be a must here.
Chicken Katsu Roll
The first few times I've been to 'Sushi Hotaru' I did have a few dishes from the 'Roll Sushi' category but, recently while they look amazing I feel the 'Hand Rolls,' 'Gunkan' and 'Nigiri' outweigh the 'Roll Sushi.'

Side Dishes
'Takoyaki' 4 pieces for $3. We ordered using the iPad and they always come out steaming hot and super crisp on the outside.

Takoyaki! nom nom
'Okonomiyaki' which was like a giant 'Takoyaki' except it lacked the crisp outside. The filling was just as flavoursome and steaming hot

Okonomiyaki $3

'Spicy Chicken Wings' The first time I had these, they weren't salty. However, after that time, I've always thought they were too salty. While they are crisp, it's a bet to order these.

Spicy Chicken Wings $3
'Crumbed Octopus' Generous serving for $3 but again was soaked in too much of the oil that it lacked the delicious octopus flavour. It was steaming hot when served though.

Crumbed Octopus
'Crumbed Calamari' similar to the fried octopus above. Generous but, lacked flavour due to overpowering grease taste.

Crumbed Calamari
'Gyoza.' I've also have had this twice but, while it's a good serving size, taste-wise there is nothing unique that wants you begging for more.

Gyoza $3. Served with a side of sweet soy sauce
Sashimi $7.90 (All Gold dishes are 7.90.) Fresh, nicely cut and my favourite. Can't say more but that I freaking love this stuff. They have different variations. I went for the tuna, salmon and kingfish option. My favourite would be the salmon out of the three as it has the the least chewy texture. I do have to say for 6 pieces at $7.90 it is a tad expensive than places I've seen. But, does look/taste more fresh. Haven't had any food poisoning so it's a good sign.

Sashimi $7.90 AUD

Nigiri Sushi
When I say try ALL things seared, I mean it. Seared scallops, seared salmon, anything you see on the menu, eat it. This is what I live for at 'Sushi Hotaru.' The smoky flavour just melts in your mouth and the juices that run through your mouth is such an amazing sensation. Every time I pop any of these bad boys into my mouth, I just want to moan at how amazing they are. It is a MUST here.

Seared Scallop $3
I do also enjoy all the sashimi, spicy types but, I think that all falls down to personal preference.

Drinks
If you love sesame you MUST order this drink. the 'Black Sesame Latte' is the most amazing drink ever. I don't know how to describe it but it's basically a milky sesame flavoured glass of awesome. It comes with a scoop of their black sesame ice cream. While the texture of the ice cream isn't at all creamy and nor dense, it saves on getting a dessert at the end.

Black Sesame Latte $5.50 AUD
I also tried the 'Green Tea Latte with Red Bean Ice Cream.' I've never been a fan of green tea flavoured things and this is no exception. The 'Red Bean Ice Cream' was quite flavourful though. It was much denser than the 'Black Sesame' scoop but nothing I would say is a definite order. Kimberley who loves green tea flavoured things, enjoyed hers so, I say if you do love the green, go for it!       All in all, I love 'Sushi Hotaru.' I'm certain I've tried more on their menu but, I'm usually so hungry and scoff through the plates that I forget to document what I had. I say look at the iPad menu and pick whatever tickles your fancy and experiment from there. I totally recommend this and every time I've taken a new friend to this place, they fall in love as well so, I think I've really hit a gem right here. In terms of pricing, if I stuff myself silly with a friend with similar eating capabilities as I have and include drinks, I say it'll be about $20 - $30 per person. Maximum $40. When I ate with my parents and Richard, we ate about $28 per person, with Kelly & Kim it was $28. It may sound like a lot now but once you're in there, it's well worth it!

Hope you're enjoying a good dose of blogging! Feel free to leave a comment if you have the same love affair or think I should try one your own hidden gems.
